More people want house prices to fall than to rise
According to a recent survey there are more people that want house prices to continue falling than for house prices to rise. There has been a general assumption that house price falls are unpopular, but the results of research carried out by the BBC shows that the majority of people actually want house prices to fall. The research shows that only around one fifth of consumers want house prices to rise.
Over one thousand people were polled as part of the research and only 22% of respondents wanted house prices to rise. On the other hand 28% of respondents wanted house prices to fall. A further 46% of respondents said that they wanted house prices to remain static. The survey was carried out following a BBC television programme, where it was discovered that a high number of people appeared to want house prices to continue falling.
Those wanting house prices to fall are unlikely to be disappointed, as economists have already reported month on month falls due to the lack of mortgage loans, with house prices now lower than they were one year ago. Many industry professionals have predicted that house prices will continue to fall over the next couple of years, and some have predicted that they could fall by up to 20%.
As part of the survey respondents were asked whether their spending habits would be affected if house prices were to fall by 10% or more. Whilst 38% said that they would have to make cut backs in the event of this type of fall, around 60% said that this level of fall would not affect their spending levels.
